Introduction
The oriental chapter of COCOSDA (The International Committee for the Co-ordination and Standardization of Speech Databases and Assessment Techniques) is pleased to announce that the 13th Oriental COCOSDA Workshop was held on November 24-25, in Kathmandu, Nepal. Oriental COCOSDA is an international workshop held annually by the oriental chapter of COCOSDA. The first preparatory meeting was held in Hong Kong in 1997 and the other twelve workshops were held in following countries/regions: Japan, Taiwan, China, Korea, Thailand, Singapore, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Vietnam, Japan and China. The purposes of the Workshop/conference is to exchange ideas, share information and discuss regional matters on creation, utilization, dissemination of spoken language corpora of oriental languages and also on the assessment methods of speech recognition/synthesis systems as well as to promote speech research on oriental languages. It is a major conference in the area of speech database collection, tool development, and corpus based research on spoken language processing, covering all the scientific and technological aspects of speech and language.
Nepal is a multi-lingual, multi-ethnic, multi-cultural country. Nepal has more than 92 officially recognized languages and more than 100 castes and ethnic groups. the multilingualism makes O-COCOSDA relevant to be organized in Nepal where more than 70 languages are only in the spoken form with many others recently are being started to be written.Need for development of technology in the area of preservation and vitalisation of these languages is inevitable. However, language technology is still an area of growing interest in Nepal and there is a lot to be done. O-COCOSDA was a very important platform for the exchange of information and expertise in this area. .
Oriental COCOSDA workshop in Nepal is expected to help in boosting the research and development in the field of Speech Technology and as well as further enthuse wider interests towards Speech Technology in East, Southeast and Middle Asia in general.
